Flavius Josephus: The Mental Gymnastics Wicked Israelites Went Through To Justify Slandering Moses In The Wilderness, Has And Will Happen Again | Ecclesiasticus 45:18

The Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus is a LONG read but worth it, huge faith booster, speaking from experience. Per usual when investigating the works of our forefathers, ignore the false images of Flavius Josephus, he did not look like an Edomite with leprosy.

At 45:00 mark in the video below, Flavius Joseph wrote specifically on this topic: the mental gymnastics wicked Israelites went through in the wilderness to justify slandering Moses. One of their failed rebellions was led by Corah (also written as Core or Korah), a Levite like Moses.

Excerpt from “Antiquities Of The Jews, Book4, Chapter 3”

4. And now Moses called for those that contended about the priesthood, that trial might be made who should be priest, and that he whose sacrifice YAHAWAH was best pleased with might be ordained to that function. There attended two hundred and fifty men, who indeed were honored by the people, not only on account of the power of their ancestors, but also on account of their own, in which they excelled the others: Aaron also and Corah came forth, and they all offered incense, in those censers of theirs which they brought with them, before the tabernacle. Hereupon so great a fire shone out as no one ever saw in any that is made by the hand of man, neither in those eruptions out of the earth that are caused by subterraneous burn-rags, nor in such fires as arise of their own accord in the woods, when the agitation is caused by the trees rubbing one against another: but this fire was very bright, and had a terrible flame, such as is kindled at the command of YAHAWAH; by whose irruption on them, all the company, and Corah himself, were destroyed, (2) and this so entirely, that their very bodies left no remains behind them. Aaron alone was preserved, and not at all hurt by the fire, because it was YAHAWAH that sent the fire to burn those only who ought to be burned. Hereupon Moses, after these men were destroyed, was desirous that the memory of this judgment might be delivered down to posterity, and that future ages might be acquainted with it; and so he commanded Eleazar, the son of Aaron, to put their censers near the brazen altar, that they might be a memorial to posterity of what these men suffered, for supposing that the power of YAHAWAH might be eluded. And thus Aaron was now no longer esteemed to have the priesthood by the favor of Moses, but by the public judgment of YAHAWAH; and thus he and his children peaceably enjoyed that honor afterward.

  • 2 Esdras 1:22 | Thus saith the Almighty Lord, When ye were in the wilderness, in the river of the Amorites, being athirst, and blaspheming my name, 23I gave you not fire for your blasphemies, but cast a tree in the water, and made the river sweet. 24What shall I do unto thee, O Jacob? thou, Juda, wouldest not obey me: I will turn me to other nations, and unto those will I give my name, that they may keep my statutes. 25Seeing ye have forsaken me, I will forsake you also; when ye desire me to be gracious unto you, I shall have no mercy upon you.
  • Ecclesiasticus 45:17 | 17 He gave unto him his commandments, and authority in the statutes of judgments, that he should teach Jacob the testimonies, and inform Israel in his laws. 18Strangers conspired together against him, and maligned him in the wilderness, even the men that were of Dathan’s and Abiron’s side, and the congregation of Core, with fury and wrath. 19This the Lord saw, and it displeased him, and in his wrathful indignation were they consumed: he did wonders upon them, to consume them with the fiery flame.

What happened before…

  • Wisdom of Solomon 18:20 | Yea, the tasting of death touched the righteous also, and there was a destruction of the multitude in the wilderness: but the wrath endured not long.

…will happen again.

  • Zechariah 13:8 | And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. 9And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.
  • John 15:18 | If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

The multitude spoken of, in the verses above, were the wicked of our nation that murmered against and rejected the first covenant. The woman, in the verse below, is the nation of Israel.

  • Revelation 12:6 | And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of YAHAWAH, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
  • Ecclesiastes 1:9 | The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
